The Sunday that nearly wasn't -

The Group includes wankers who are overseas most of the time, flying first class, and putting up photos of their leather couches in the plane, and others renting bikes to cycle around Vancouver. For example, Porter is floating around Stanley Park with NO LYCRA AT ALL! Just the clothes he was brung into the place in!

Now that is tortured.

But back to the ride. Saturday weather reports said she was going to rain mercilessly. As the 6am Sunday grey sky and light drizzle was going on against my window pane, a quick revolving resolution was unanimously agreed "No ride today".

But by 8.30am the sun was out and Tasmania, typically Hobart, was telling us "18 degrees, calm breeze, lovely day".

So Jeff and I pulled on the gear, and invited Merv to join us, and off we headed.

Against the stream of City to Casino 'fun' runners, we made the bike track at the Cenotaph, and headed off north, at about 15km/h (with a desired aim of 20km/hr).

The headwind was about 2 knots, and slowed us down. But after the knoll at Moonah, it was all down hill.

Jeff and Merv hadn't met, but it seems they have both spent yards of time in Canberra, and are both going to Russia or Mongolia or somesuch new trendy place to go 'this year' - this year.

Here is Larkey's cabin on the airbus:

But here is the cruel reality: only space for one, and Annabel had to travel with the hand luggage down the back!

We (on our bikes on the way to Mona this morning) debated the wrongness of that, and all agreed that the disgrace reflects poorly on the whole Larkey family.

We also debated what we would have done. Take the 1st? Push the old lady into the upgrade? Refuse and stay together and enjoy the flight together? These and other lies will be revealed another time.

But what about the results of the ride? Well, with an aim of 20km/hr average, we had a slow start, but made up for it with 30km/hr on the return legs (some). Maximum speed 46km/hr.
Riding time (excluding pauses and coffee at Mona): 1 1/2 hrs
Distance 29 km
And Average Speeed: 18.8km/hr

Conclusion: I've no doubt that with a little new bike under a Larkey, and a determined effort, we can build up to 20km/hr and break all known records, of our own.

Future - we have Fitz going away too, and Larkey still in UK, and Porter presumably returning in a week or so; so I think the next gig should be to the top of the Bonnet Hill.

Over and out. 21 May 2017
